The infamous El Raval quarter, with its narrow lanes full of dark figures, lies in the middle of Barcelona, in the Old Town, near the water. Where earlier, sailors shared the cheap little flats with working families, migrants from all over the world now characterize the area. In the small alleys their little barbershops lie side by side. Each nationality has its own. The businesses cater for parallel societies and have little contact with one another. Whoever enters apparently leaves Spain behind to plunge into a safe place of familiar rituals and memories of home. The barbers live from their regular customers and their almost pastoral ability to constantly talk about everything and nothing, or remain silent, whilst they softly touch and courageously beautify the heads and cheeks of the weary and burdened.

Lino lives in Turin with the family of his sister. He doesn't have a good job and never enough money. But in a day his life changes: he wins 1 billion dollars in a lottery and... everyone becomes a friend, the girl who he liked becomes his girlfriend and his sister begins to love him. In the early 80s, in a small barbershop on the outskirts of Seoul, there is a barber with a small stature just like the size of the barbershop. When there are no customers, he cleans up the barbershop, drinks tea, and enjoys listening to the radio, which reads sad stories, and is moved. The neighbors of the neighborhood visit him without any burden and share their stories. Sometimes, the neighborhood trio (Mr. Gu, Mr. Jeon, Mr. Park) tease him for being a woman, but the barber just smiles. One day, the barber gets into an argument with Mr. Gu, the owner of the hole-in-the-wall shop, due to a misunderstanding, and when Mr. Gu blurts out the word “woman,” the barber has a big fight with Mr. Gu. Morning comes as always. As usual, the barber’s wife tightly bandages the barber’s bulging chest. And the barber, she, rides her bicycle to the barbershop, hiding her hidden chest.

A British film noir featuring John Le Mesurier giving a superbly understated performance in, for him, a non-typical role as a shady Soho nightclub owner. The film gives the viewer a real feel for the seamier side of Post War London and also features the new ideas and methods involved in crime fighting, including a visit from an American cop. Strong supporting roles from many British actors, mostly known for their comedic roles, including Ballard Berkeley (as Supt. Chester), later famous for his role as 'The Major' in Fawlty Towers. Well-written and directed and with some great twists in the plot, which play away from the typical 50's stereotypical characters of the more mainstream crime films of the period. A real gem!

In The Bar, a who's who of the 1990s Kiwi acting community play punters at an Auckland bar. Director Dorthe Scheffmann (Vermilion) made the short film at infamous Ponsonby pub SPQR, which she co-owned. A handheld camera weaves in and around the space, as a drug dealer and his friend (Peter Tait and Bruce Hopkins) talk business; yuppies hold forth on political issues (Peter Elliott, Harry Sinclair and Simon Prast); and a couple (Jennifer Ward-Lealand and Michael Hurst) try to hold their relationship together.

Playful and destructive, it attacks cars, starts landslides and terrorises New Zealand ski resorts but behind the bad behaviour there's a sharp mind at work.
